Movie Monday (August 1): Nope

nope

Each week, I will look at a movie that is currently in theaters or available to stream and give some reasons why people should watch it. This isn’t necessarily a film critique, rather, an overview of what I think is enjoyable about the film, and why it’s worth seeing. This week we’ll be looking at Jordan Peele’s latest film, Nope.

Nope has caused a pretty starch contrast in enjoyment levels from those that have already seen it. Some think it to be a wonderfully deep movie with great effects to boot, while others label it as one of the worst movies they’ve seen. I’m not here to plant a flag and say it’s the best thing I’ve ever seen, but I certainly want to debunk the assertion that it is one of the worst. Nope has themes that the viewer may or may not agree with, but I think this movie has a theme, just as easy to understand, that everyone can agree: the importance of real cinema. From special affects to tropes regarding the industry, Peele wanted to create something that was worth going to the theater for and displayed the power of filmmaking. I think if you watch movies at all, you can appreciate that. There are other themes present, I won’t reveal them so you, the viewer can see or not seem them for yourself, but one of them is in my opinion, hidden enough, to where you really have to be digging deep trying to find it. And while I certainly have my questions after the movie, I think that’s why Nope should be appreciated- if you don’t want something deep, you don’t have to find it, and if you want all of Peele’s messages to reach you, they can. Content wise there is chaos, some things that confuse, and some things that are concerning. It’s really more in the suspense part of the horror genre with a couple of weirdly horrific scenes involving a monkey. Yes, a monkey. Overall, if the viewer can take a step back, and not involve themselves with trying to figure out what every little thing means, and just appreciate the cinematic elements of this movie, it at least shouldn’t be a nope.

Nope is now playing in theaters.
