A Rebel Song

Each week, we’ll be previewing Auburn Football’s upcoming opponent. This week, it’s the Ole Miss Rebels.

Ole Miss is in its second season under head coach Lane Kiffin, who has built a formidable offense in a short time. The Rebel offense was historic in 2020, posting over 39 points and 550 yards per game. The defense however, was historic in a bad way, giving up almost 600 yards and 38 points per game. The team split the difference, going 5-5 in the shortened season, with Auburn getting a 35-28 victory.

This year is much of the same offensively. Ole Miss’ offense is prolific, with Heisman candidate quarterback Matt Corral leading the way. They are putting up an average of 541 yards and 42 points per game. The defense is somewhat improved, allowing only 30 points and 241 yards per game. The dynamic offense and improved defense have led the Rebels to a 6-1 record, and the #10 spot in the AP Poll.

Players to watch for:

Quarterback Matt Corral- As mentioned above, Corral is a Heisman candidate, and Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin recently called him the front-runner. He currently leads the Rebels in both passing yardage, with 1,913 yards, and rushing yards, with 474. He also has 24 total touchdowns to one interception. As he goes, the offense goes.

Defensive end Sam Williams- The Montgomery native is a 5th year senior, and has caused havoc in opposing backfields this season. While he only has 29 tackles, 8.5 of those have been for loss. He leads the Rebels in sacks this year with 7.5, and has had at least one sack in six of Ole Miss’ seven games. He has also forced three fumbles.
