The Big Red Machine
Every week, we’ll be taking a look at Auburn’s upcoming opponent. It’s the last week of the regular season, so we’ll be taking a look at the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Nick Saban is in his 15th year as the head coach of Alabama, and has built a résumé to put him in the argument for best college coach of all time. He has won 7 national championships, 6 of them coming at Alabama. He has a head coaching record of 266-66-1, and 9 conference titles.
This season, Alabama has shown some weakness, but has still managed to maintain a top 4 spot for most of the year. They have compiled a 10-1 record behind a strong offense and an opportunistic defense. The offense is averaging 44 points per game, while the defense is only giving up 20. While the Bama rushing attack has struggled at points this year, only gaining six yards on the ground against LSU, quarterback Bryce Young is in the race to win the Heisman this season. He has over 3,500 yards and 38 touchdowns to go along with just three interceptions.
Players to watch for:
Wide Receiver Jameson Williams: Williams played two years at Ohio State, seeing action in 22 games and starting six. Unhappy with his situation in Columbus, Williams transferred to Alabama, where he has thrived. He has over 1,000 receiving yards this season, and 13 touchdowns. He averages 110 yards per game, and has 7 touchdown receptions of over 50 yards. If Bryce Young does win the Heisman, a lot of credit goes to Williams.
Defensive End Will Anderson: Anderson is the best player on Alabama’s defense in only his sophomore year. That, of course, puts him among the top defensive players in the country. He has 79 tackles on the year, good for second on the team, with 13.5 sacks. He is in contention for several defensive awards.
