Movie Mondays (April 11): The Lost City

Each week, I will look at a movie that is currently in theaters or available to stream and give some reasons why people should watch it. This isn’t necessarily a film critique, rather, an overview of what I think is enjoyable about the film, and why it’s worth seeing. This week we’ll be looking at The Lost City, starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum.

If you’ll recall, a few weeks ago we discussed Uncharted, which is in a similar space as The Lost City, but don’t expect to see the exact same thing if you’re going to see The Lost City. Here, the movie attempts to be funnier, but also more romantic. It doesn’t do a bad job of it, as the first half of the movie is on the funnier side, while the romantics grow in the ladder half. This is a familiar role for Bullock, who has been in a lot of romantic comedies over the years. Channing Tatum provides a few laughs, and Brad Pitt’s brief appearance is one of the funnier sequences of the movie. Daniel Radcliffe plays a villain who isn’t intimidating enough to be feared, but not funny enough to think of him with a smile. The movie as a whole is solid enough, while not doing anything dramatically wrong, it stays in a pretty safe space for the genre, just with a setting that isn’t as common, leading to a more adventurous romantic comedy.

The Lost City is currently showing in theaters.
