Each week, I will look at a movie that is currently in theaters or available to stream and give some reasons why people should watch it. This isn’t necessarily a film critique, rather, an overview of what I think is enjoyable about the film, and why it’s worth seeing. This week, we’ll look at Stowaway, starring Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, and Toni Collete.

Stowaway is a Netflix Sci Fi film about the crew of a space exploration to Mars. As you can
imagine, things don’t go according to plan (when do they ever do in space) and the crew has to come up with a gameplan for situation they weren’t trained to handle- an extra person on board. Look, I get it, you’re probably asking how someone could accidentally be on board of a space shuttle and no one notice, that is completely fair, but we’re not trying to do a true to life documentary here. This movie is about the humanity of making a life or death decision on behalf of everyone on board at the expense of one, and how there are different ways to view this nearly impossible decision. There are some particularly intense moments, especially towards the end, but nothing you’ve never seen. I did like however, that the beginning of the movie jumped right into some intensity with the launch of the shuttle. One could argue that back story would be valuable, especially given the very human nature of the decision that will eventually come, but I think you get enough background on the characters throughout the story to know where each is coming from, and it doesn’t matter to me if you know this information for 5 minutes or 50, as long as you know it. Ultimately, Stowaway won’t redefine the genre or present things unseen before, but it offers as big of a problem as one can face, and offers an ominous and lonely setting to have the situation play out.

Stowaway is now available to stream on Netflix.
