Each week, I will look at a movie that is currently in theaters or available to stream and give some reasons why people should watch it. This isn’t necessarily a film critique, rather, an overview of what I think is enjoyable about the film, and why it’s worth seeing. This week we’ll be looking at Top Gun: Maverick.

If you’ve read or heard anything about Top Gun: Maverick, then you know how universally well received it is. After seeing the movie recently there is nothing I can find to dispute the rave reviews. The movie’s purpose is clear, and the goal of the movie is stated in the early part of the film. There isn’t necessarily many twists to the story, as the late dramatic moments are predictable in a way because of the nature of the mission. Maverick also operates in rare air because it doesn’t use much in the way of bloodshed, cussing, or sex. It’s simplified excellence. They essentially say, we’re going to give you a movie that is going to be somewhat predictable, but with excellent character development, meaningful dialogue, and extraordinary action sequences that feel tense and triumphant. Tom Cruise to no surprise feels the exact same as Maverick and Miles Tellar fits the mold for Goose’s son, Rooster. Really all the characters fit well but Cruise and Tellar are the most important and they nailed it. It shouldn’t be a surprise that nearly 40 years would set the stage for a worthy follow up for Top Gun, but the surprise lies in the fact that this is actually a better movie and will also go down as a classic. Again the writers and director kept it simple, focusing on the depth of characters and the action in the air, and for that, this movie was first in class

Top Gun: Maverick is currently playing in theaters.
