Many of you may recall the tragic accident that took place on I-85, June 19, 2021. In this horrible event, ten people lost their lives including eight young people from the Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches. This year and for years to come, the Ranches will be holding the ALSYR Memorial Children’s Charity Classic. This golf tournament will be to honor and remember those eight precious children who are in the arms of their Savior.

The golf tournament is sponsored by Lyn Wheatley and SafetyNet Behavioral Healthcare. Wheatley is a former Rancher who was the first Rancher to graduate college and was the CEO for the Ranches (1991-1997). This tournament will be held on August 9, 2022, at Robert Trent Jones-Grand National in Opelika, Ala. and benefits the Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches. The Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches is a 501(c)(3) charity founded by the Sheriffs of Alabama in 1966. This organization provides long-term, loving homes for needy young people across the state of Alabama. Ranchers live on the Ranch in a home with loving houseparents and other peers. They attend public school and enjoy extracurricular activities that interest them! The Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches currently operate four Ranches located in Baldwin County, Colbert County, St. Clair County and Tallapoosa County as well as the Administrative Office in Montgomery.

“When we lost those eight precious young people, our hearts were completely broken,” said Michael Smith, Chief Executive Officer for the Ranches. “Though our hearts continue to long for those children, we know they are in a better place. We also knew we had to do something to honor them and the legacy they each left behind,” he said.

At this tournament, each team will enjoy breakfast, a round of golf, Coca-Cola products, a catered lunch and an awards ceremony following the tournament. First Place Gross and Net Division winning teams will win a spot in the Tournament of Champions in 2023. Additional prizes will be awarded for 2nd and 3rd place winning teams. Special prizes will be awarded for Long Drive and Closest-to-the-Pin on Par 3 holes. Hole-in-One prize opportunities will also be available.

The price for a four-player team is $600. Sponsorship levels range from $100 for a hole sponsorship to $2,000 for the Platinum level with increasing benefits given to the higher tiers. All sponsors receive at least one team in the event and recognition for their support.
