Each week, I will look at a movie that is currently in theaters or available to stream and give some reasons why people should watch it. This isn’t necessarily a film critique, rather, an overview of what I think is enjoyable about the film, and why it’s worth seeing. This week, we’ll look back at Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
Recently, there were rumors that Sherlock Holmes 3 was going to get made, but the pandemic derailed it. Hopefully, they can get restarted on the project soon, but for now, we’ll continue to look in the past. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was actually the second movie in the series, but it was my favorite, maybe due to the fact that I saw this one first. Jared Harris was particularly captivating and creepy as Professor James Moriarty to the point where he is one of my favorite villains. There was something about his calming deception that made him the perfect antagonist opposite of the smooth and clever Robert Downey Jr, who is, of course, excellent as Sherlock Holmes. He is everything I would imagine him to be. Primarily witty, with a sense of humor, and a screw that is about 15 percent loose. Sometimes being a mastermind can be a bit much after all. The film weaves its’ mystery in just over two hours, which can be dangerous for a mystery movie, but is of no concern here with the amount of wit and changes in scenery present. A Game of Shadows was perfect in mingling the severity of a mystery, with the humor that can be derived out of its’ lead detective. The movie can please those looking for a story to solve, but can please those looking for a laugh. After two such movies in the series, one can only hope a third installment to the franchise will step out of the shadows.
Sherlock Holmes: a Game of Shadows is currently available to be streamed on Netflix.
