Welcome to Movie Monday! Each week we will look at a movie either in theaters or available to stream by a major streamer. We will briefly review the movie, and tell you why it is enjoyable. This isn’t meant to be a detailed criticism, rather, a celebration of why a movie is entertaining or worth the watch. We will typically avoid spoilers, but if there are any, we will denote that clearly before it appears in the review. This week, we’ll be looking at F1: The Movie.
Although F1: The Movie came out a few months ago, I felt I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about it at some point because it is my favorite movie released in 2025 so far. One of the many great things about F1: The Movie is you don’t have to like the sport or even be very aware of it to like the movie. F1: The Movie is thoroughly cool.
The intensity of Brad Pitt’s Sonny Hayes in the cockpit, the speed that you can feel as you watch, and the appropriate drama that build with the team throughout the season are just some of the things that make you feel immersed in this world of racing.
Brad Pitt is excellent, as he plays a driver that just loves to drive. Even though some of the events of the movie could change him, he stays true to his character throughout making it feel like it is an authentic story. His clashing with a young, hot shot teammate feels realistic also, and the whole dynamic of the team seems to teeter as the two work through their conflict.
To go back to some of the intensity in the racing, credit goes to director Joseph Kosinki, who directed Top Gun: Maverick. The action shots and intensity of the film felt eerily similar to Maverick, which was a strong point of that film and a strong point of this one. Although some may not know anything about the sport of F1, this is built to transcend the sport, and should race to the top of everyone’s watch list.
F1: The Movie is now available on Apple TV+.
