Kate FM’s Album of the Week (May 26): “Janet” by Janet Jackson

aotw-11

Release Date: May 18, 1993

Number of Songs: 28

Album Notes: Around the time this album released, Jackson was in a high-profile bidding war between two record labels, which was eventually won by Virgin Records America. The contract was worth $40 million, making her the highest paid musician in the world at the time. That record would be broken just days later by her brother, Michael. She stylized the album as “janet.” meant to be pronounced “Janet, period” as way to distance herself from the Jackson name. Up until that point, she had received criticism revolving around the suggestion that her success came only from her connection with her family. She wrote all lyrics for the 75 minute album, as well as co-producing and co-writing all of the musical arrangements. In the United States, Janet became the singer’s third consecutive album to top the Billboard 200 and her first to debut at number one.
