Welcome to Movie Monday! Each week we will look at a movie either in theaters or available to stream by a major streamer. We will briefly review the movie, and tell you why it is enjoyable. This isn’t meant to be a detailed criticism, rather, a celebration of why a movie is entertaining or worth the watch. We will typically avoid spoilers, but if there are any, we will denote that clearly before it appears in the review. This week, we will be looking at the movie Weapons.
This year has already been a solid year for the horror genre, with Final Destination: Bloodlines doing franchise records, and Sinners being the year’s biggest surprise hit.
Weapons adds to the pre spooky season brilliance with a hit entry of its own. Starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, Weapons is built off the known being the unknown. An event made clear in any trailer or promotional material you’ve seen, with an ominous answer looming for the questions “how?” and “why?”
The story presented in Weapons is meticulously built with a layer by layer approach to understanding the events of the days after the disappearance of the kids. The layers, in this case being the different characters and how their stories unfold leading up to the final events of the film.
I found this to be a very good method of storytelling, and a great way to slowly but surely unravel the mystery. The ending, which I will not spoil aside from just one character’s name, is well received but left me wanting to know so much more about the character of Aunt Gladys.
Gladys, as you will see, is a key character with a ton of possibilities and I would not be surprised at all to see a movie made about her. Weapons does a good job overall, of making you terrified, when you’re not exactly sure what to be terrified of.
Ultimately, the method of storytelling and the big finale will be the determining factors as to whether or not you decide to put Weapons into your favorite horror movie arsenal.
Weapons is currently playing in theaters everywhere.
