Welcome to Movie Monday! Each week we will look at a movie either in theaters or available to stream by a major streamer. We will briefly review the movie, and tell you why it is enjoyable. This isn’t meant to be a detailed criticism, rather, a celebration of why a movie is entertaining or worth the watch. We will typically avoid spoilers, but if there are any, we will denote that clearly before it appears in the review. This week, we will be looking at the movie Happy Gilmore 2.
Let’s begin by addressing the elephant in the room: no, Happy Gilmore 2 is not as good as the original. However, if you understand that coming in, you’re still going to have a good time and a chuckle watching this one.
If Happy Gilmore 2 had a subtitle, it would probably be “Happy Gilmore 2: Happy Loves Cameo.” The amount of cameos in this movie rival anything I have personally seen. From the sports world to celebrity figures and social media influencers, if you are aware of the internet, you will see someone familiar.
While not as many laughs as its predecessor, Happy Gilmore 2 gives you a trip down memory lane and enough quips to make you smile. A surprise twist early in the film, sets the stage for why Happy wasn’t so happy for a long time, as he works to find himself and his beloved golf game again.
This movie was not meant for the Academy Awards, it was not meant to be groundbreaking, and it was not meant to reinvent the wheel. Happy Gilmore 2 was made to give the viewer something to smile about and something to add to the memory bank for one of Adam Sandler’s most iconic characters.
Happy had already learned to putt, now he learned to stay true to why we loved him in the first place.
