Welcome to Movie Monday! Each week we will look at a movie either in theaters or available to stream by a major streamer. We will briefly review the movie, and tell you why it is enjoyable. This isn’t meant to be a detailed criticism, rather, a celebration of why a movie is entertaining or worth the watch. We will typically avoid spoilers, but if there are any, we will denote that clearly before it appears in the review. This month, in honor of the month of October, we’ll look at new and old horror movies. This week, we return to something a little more recent with the 2017 version of It.

The first adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, It, was successful two part story that felt a little more campy and a little more humorous. There is nothing campy or humorous about the 2017 rendition with Andy Muschietti at the helm.

The movie is truly terrifying, with Bill Skarsgard delivering a chilling and memorable performance as Pennywise the clown (a role is about to take on again in the upcoming show: Welcome to Derry.)

The film does an excellent job with making very few changes to the original story, yet making every part a little scarier and a little more suspenseful. The younger actors and their adult counterparts all do a quality job of making their characters a big part of the team and making your interest in them grow.

Although the sequel did not quite deliver like the first, It is a incredibly scary and memorable movie that is truly worth the watch and the rewatch… and you’ll never look at a red balloon the same way.

It (2017) is currently streaming on HBO Max.
