Movie Mondays (Death on the Nile)

Each week, I will look at a movie that is currently in theaters or available to stream and give some reasons why people should watch it. This isn’t necessarily a film critique, rather, an overview of what I think is enjoyable about the film, and why it’s worth seeing. This week we’ll be looking at Death on The Nile.

As most may know, Death on The Nile is an adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel by the same name. I should note, I have not read the novel, so any differences or omissions were not known to me. If you saw Murder on the Orient Express back in 2017, then you’ve seen something very similar to what you get here (that movie also being an adaptation of a Christie novel.) Both movies star Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective that Christie used in many of her stories. I believe Branagh as Poirot is a decent enough protagonist, who provides some wit, but is very tactical. The acting in the movie is solid, with Armie Hammer and Gal Gadot being at the center of the murder mystery. The run time of two hours for a mystery movie could lend itself to potential boredom or dragging, but I felt there was enough here to be entertained, and enough clues to have continued evaluation of who the criminal was (again as someone who hadn’t read the novel.) Given that the reviews are very similar between Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express, it would be simple to say, how you felt about that one, will be how you feel about this one. Probably not a knock your socks off piece of film, but worth the entry into the industry’s segment of murder mysteries.

Death on the Nile is now playing in theaters.
