Each week, I will look at a movie that is currently in theaters or available to stream and give some reasons why people should watch it. This isn’t necessarily a film critique, rather, an overview of what I think is enjoyable about the film, and why it’s worth seeing. This week, we’ll be talking about Fright Night (2011) starring Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin.

If you’ve read one of these before, you know that I’m fairly uncultured and when in doubt, have not read the book or seen the original. Enter Fright Night, of which the original is from the 1980’s and I have not seen. But, I have recently watched the remake from 2011, and wanted to share a few thoughts on it (again, without reference of the original.) Fright Night is about a neighborhood near Las Vegas that has a new resident, a resident with a taste for blood (Colin Farrell) and the neighbor that tries to stop him (Anton Yelchin.) This movie is a lot of fun, it’s not necessarily ultra funny/comedic, but it has light hearted moments and attempts at humor to lighten what would otherwise be very dark subject manner. The movie doesn’t attempt many surprises and is straight forward with a few things most movies would take liberties with. For example, the beginning of the movie has some intrigue if Colin Farrell’s character is indeed a vampire. Instead of trying to hide this either from the viewer or the characters in the movie, it’s pretty evident to absolutely everybody by about 40 minutes in that we’re dealing with a vampire. Another small element that I liked but will not describe as thoroughly so I don’t spoil too much, is the fact that the settings where the main action takes place all could have been the final epic battle, but the settings and action continually take it up a notch the last 45 minutes of the movie. Ultimately, Fright Night is not the only thing of its kind, but it does operate in a space that is less occupied than most, and for that, the movie is a bloody fun time.

Fright Night is available to stream on Hulu.
