Each week, I will look at a movie that is currently in theaters or available to stream and give some reasons why people should watch it. This isn’t necessarily a film critique, rather, an overview of what I think is enjoyable about the film, and why it’s worth seeing. This week we’ll look at the comedy classic, Anchorman.

Early to mid 2000s was prime Will Ferrell, and maybe his best comedy classic came in 2004 with Anchorman as he plays the now famous Ron Burgundy. Anchorman is great because of the lack of awareness that its characters have. Most of them are unknowingly rude, stupid, yet very confident. This kind of humor is perfect for Ferrell, who delivers great lines when he’s generally unaware of the entire situation. There, of course, is not much of a plot, which is not what comedies are known for and in my view is perfectly fine for a good comedy not to have much of one. Instead, some of the supporting characters have their own humorous personalities such as Steve Carrell’s Brick, who, you guessed it, is as dumb as, a brick. But hey, he really loves lamp. I’m not entirely sure this movie would get made today because of some of the joking sexism, but again, this is to be humorous, and it was funny to see the men figure out their wrongdoing as Christina Applegate’s character, Veronica, gives them trouble as she proves herself all movie long. It’s also appropriate because I imagine that is a humorous reputation of how some newsrooms might have been in the 70s, which is when this film is set. Again, this movie is not meant for serious topics, rather, it’s meant to see Ferrell and company crack jokes and look excessively silly. This movie did an excellent job of that, which only leaves the question, I’m Ron Burgundy?

Anchorman is currently available to stream on Netflix.
